Many years ago, It’s said that a beautifully dressed lady used to visit the church at Zennor. No body knew who the mysterious lady was or where she’d come from. Every Sunday she’d come dressed in the most elegant gown and wearing the finest jewels, to listen to the church's best singer. Mathew Trewella. Mathew had the most beautiful voice. He was the best singer in the village. One night after Mathew sang the last hymn, he looked up and caught the eye of this beautiful lady. At once she ran out of the church and down towards the cliffs, for you see no one was supposed to know who she was. Mathew, having fallen instantly in love ran after the woman. Everyone from the church tried to stop him, but nobody would stop him from running after his love. He swept her off her feet, ran into the surf and down into the deep sea. He was never seen at Zennor again.
Some years later a couple of fisherman set off a few miles off the coast. As they dropped their anchor ready to catch some fish, a young lady named Morveren appeared from the depths. She had beautiful long blonde hair and where there should have been two legs, there was a long, blue, fish-like tail. She was a mermaid! She kindly asked the two fishermen to lift their anchor, for it had set down right outside the door of the underwater home. She explained that she was anxious to get home to her husband Mathew and her children. The fishermen, believing the mermaid was a bad omen, immediately raised their anchor and left. To this day it is believed that the woman who visited the church at Zennor, is the mermaid that the fisherman encountered and Mathew Trewella is the very same Mathew that the mermaid was anxious to get home to.
It is said that if you sit on the cliffs at Zennor, and listen carefully. You can faintly hear the beautiful sound, of Mathew singing along to the sounds of the ocean.
